This is one of the most common questions we hear from new patients at Hope Dental Professionals. The short answer is that most healthy adults need a professional dental cleaning every six months. But the real answer depends on your unique oral health, your habits, and any underlying conditions you might have.
Many patients assume the “twice a year” rule is just a suggestion that dentists made up. In reality, this schedule is based on decades of research about how plaque and tartar build up on teeth. We follow this standard because it works for the vast majority of our Bentonville patients.

The Standard Recommendation
For most people with healthy gums and no major dental issues, we recommend a cleaning every six months. This interval allows our hygienists to remove tartar that your toothbrush cannot reach. It also gives us a regular chance to spot small problems before they become big ones.
During these twice-yearly visits, we check for early signs of decay, gum inflammation, and even oral cancer. Many dental issues don’t cause pain until they are quite advanced. Catching them early saves you time, money, and discomfort down the road.
The six-month schedule also helps you stay accountable to your home care routine. When you know we’re going to check your gums and ask about flossing, you’re more likely to keep up with daily brushing and flossing. That accountability makes a real difference in your long-term oral health.
When You Might Need More Frequent Cleanings
Some patients need to come in every three or four months instead of every six. This is especially true for patients with a history of gum disease. Once gum disease develops, it tends to return without consistent professional maintenance.
Patients with diabetes, heart disease, or autoimmune conditions often benefit from more frequent cleanings. These conditions can affect your immune response and make your gums more vulnerable to infection. We work with your medical providers to create a schedule that protects both your oral and overall health.
Smokers and tobacco users also typically need cleanings more often. Tobacco use weakens gum tissue and slows healing after any irritation. We recommend these patients come in at least four times per year to stay ahead of potential problems.
Pregnant patients sometimes need extra cleanings during their second trimester. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make gums swell, bleed, and trap plaque more easily. Our team coordinates with your obstetrician to keep you safe and comfortable throughout your pregnancy.
When You Might Need Less Frequent Cleanings
A small number of patients have excellent oral hygiene and naturally low plaque buildup. These patients might do very well with one cleaning per year. We only make this recommendation after reviewing several years of consistently perfect exams and cleanings.
Young children and teenagers with no cavities or gum issues often stick to the six-month schedule. Their mouths are still developing, so we want to monitor growth and eruption patterns closely. We adjust their frequency as they get older and their oral health patterns become clearer.
Older adults with full dentures and no natural teeth do not need routine cleanings for those dentures. However, we still want to see them once a year to examine their gums, jawbone, and any remaining teeth. Oral cancer screenings remain important at any age, even for denture wearers.
Why We Don’t Guess
We never guess how often you need a cleaning based on your age or your appearance. Our hygienists measure your gum pockets, check for bleeding, and evaluate your plaque index at every visit. Those clinical measurements tell us exactly how your mouth is responding to your current routine.
Dr. Pate reviews every patient’s cleaning history and clinical data before making a frequency recommendation. She earned her AACD accreditation by being meticulous about details like these. That attention to precision guides every decision we make for your care.
Your Best Schedule Starts Here
The best way to know your ideal cleaning schedule is to come in for a comprehensive exam. We take X-rays, measure your gums, and ask about your medical history and daily habits. Then we give you a clear recommendation tailored specifically to you, not to a generic rule.
